Fighting Fires!

Many times, in my career I’ve been faced with a business crisis. In one of my leadership roles we thought our product created a health risk to our customers. It kept me up many nights thinking are we doing everything possible to protect people. I spent weeks working with my leadership team to implement a plan to identify the cause, communicate to customers, and to resolve this issue. In the end, through extensive testing we discovered our initial assumptions although correct were a one off. Our product was not a health risk or danger. Looking back, would I have done anything differently? No! At the time there was nothing more important.
But what occurred during that period? My team and I were concerned about our customers and how to mitigate risk. We were in the trenches. The key company goals and priorities took a back seat. Crisis management creates firefighters with a singular purpose. Many business leaders today are fighting fires.
